Robert paints and draws people directly from the model, where he seeks to capture both the likeness and mood of the figure. He sometimes does quick pastel or oil sketches to explore compositions, color combinations, and themes for his paintings.  Some poses are taken from notable artworks, such as Degas' bathers.
